What a great day to kick off our campaign! The weather was great and the atmosphere was even better. Thanks to Governor Crist, Lamar Advertising, Hilex Poly, Florida Retail Federation, American Chemistry Council, Florida Recycling Partnership and Recycle Florida Today for making the event and press conference a great success. The event really showed the ways government, business and individuals are working together to protect the environment.
More than 500 students, many of which brought 22 plastic bags for recycling, were here today, in addition to hundreds of others celebrating Earth Day and the launch of Easy As One. We collected more than 7,500 bags to be properly recycled.
It is estimated that the U.S. goes through 100 billion plastic shopping bags annually – an estimated 12 million barrels of oil is required to make all those bags. By collecting these bags to be properly recycled and helping to distribute reusable bags we showed people that one easy, ordinary action can make a difference. Thank you to our participants that helped out by providing reusable bags and to Florida State Parks for providing one day passes to students that recycled plastic bags.
The launch of Easy As One and Earth Day at the Capitol was a great success. We hope to see you at the next Easy As One collection event at the Downtown Marketplace in Tallahassee.
